Ronnie Brown added a new wrinkle to the wildcat, and the Miami Dolphins utilized their famous formation to get past the New York Jets on Monday night.
Brown scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner, and Chad Henne passed for 241 yards and two scores as the Dolphins (2-3) beat the Jets, 31-27, at Land Shark Stadium.
For the first time all season, Brown threw a pass out of the wildcat formation this one for a 21-yard gain on the Dolphins' opening series. That 80-yard drive resulted in Brown's first touchdown of the night.
The do-it-all tailback scored again in the fourth, and this one counted most.
After Henne led Miami to the Jets' 4-yard line with two long passes to Greg Camarillo, Brown took a direct snap and utilized blocks from Justin Smiley and Lousaka Polite to get into the end zone with six seconds left on the clock.
"I thought they could never score a touchdown," Jets' coach Rex Ryan said.
"A complete embarrassment by our defense and by me. Obviously we have to prepare better. I'll take full responsibility for that. I've never been involved in a game like that."
The Dolphins confused the Jets (3-2) all night on offense. Brown ran over 15 plays out of the wildcat, and backup quarterback Pat White came in to run a quarterback keeper in the fourth with 3-plus minutes remaining and the game on the line.
In the third, Miami ran the wildcat five straight times in a drive that stretched into the fourth and onto the Jets' 1-yard line.
It was Chad Henne & Co. who surprised the Jets the most, though.
In his second start as a pro, Henne kept cool under pressure.
He completed 20 of 26 passes and kept the Dolphins rallying in a frenzied fourth.
He opened the quarter with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Fasano and later found Ted Ginn Jr. on a 53-yard pass play to put the Dolphins ahead, 24-20 with 10:19 on the clock.
"It was a heck of an education for the guy tonight," Miami coach Tony Sparano said.
"He handled it with poise, did a tremendous job managing the clock, made a nice play to Teddy and then to finish the thing he made some key plays to finish the drive."
Henne's counterpart played good enough to win. Jets' rookie Mark Sanchez had 174 yards and a touchdown against Miami, which won its second straight division game. Sanchez got plenty of help from newcomer Braylon Edwards, who was traded to New York from Cleveland last week.
Edwards caught a touchdown pass and set up another score after hauling in a 35-yard pass down the left sideline.
"Braylon was lights out. I've never seen anyone catch the ball like that," Sanchez said.
The duo's performance wasn't enough.
"They played us hard, but we made a lot more plays than they did," Henne said. "Two division games that's great for us."
It's a far stretch from how Miami started the season 0-3 with quarterback Chad Pennington out for the season after a loss to San Diego.
