Hurricanes Destroyed By Georgia Tech

Canes defense gave up 472 rushing yards in game

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS4.com) ― It was supposed to be an announcement to the college football world that the Hurricanes were back. It was supposed to be a chance for the Hurricanes to put a firm grip on a shot at the ACC title. Instead, "The U" was demolished by a Georgia Tech offense that seemed to be just toying with the once vaunted Hurricane run defense.

Tech rushed for 472 yards out of the triple-option offense. The 472 yards is the second most the Hurricanes have given up, in the school's history, only behind a 1944 game when Auburn shredded the Hurricanes for 536 yards.

The final score of 41-23 was closer than the actual game was. The game was basically over when the Hurricanes got off the bus in Atlanta.

Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer ran for 128 yards in the first half, while two other players came up just short of running for 100 yards. Overall, Georgia Tech finished with the fifth-most rushing yards in a game in the history of the program.

For the Hurricanes, both freshman quarterbacks, Robert Marve and Jacory Harris, got reps at the position. Both quarterbacks found open receivers early in the game, the problem was, the open receivers played for Georgia Tech.

But even though they were demolished by Georgia Tech, all is not lost for the Hurricanes. For Tech to win the Coastal division, a combination of North Carolina, Virginia, and Virginia Tech would have to lose at least one game. Of course this is the ACC, a conference no one wants to win and one many think doesn't deserve to be in a BCS game this year.
