Jacory Harris found Travis Benjamin deep, and the Miami Hurricanes rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat Wake Forest, 28-27, on Saturday.
Harris finished with 334 yards on 22 of 34 passing, with his performance in the fourth quarter making the ACC win possible. He threw touchdown passes to Tervaris Johnson and Benjamin as the Hurricanes scored 14 unanswered points to finish the game, the latter a 9-play, 82 yard drive with 1:09 left.
Miami was looking for big production a week after a demoralizing loss to Clemson. Wake Forest outplayed the Hurricanes (6-2), and quarterback Riley Skinner easily piled up 351 yards on Miami's secondary before leaving the game in the fourth with an injury.
The Demon Deacons (4-5) had more plays (94 to 76), more net yards (560 to 364) and more possession time (38:52 to 21:08), but Miami's Harris came up big when it counted most.
After two incomplete passes, the sophomore quarterback connected with receiver Aldarius Johnson on fourth-and-16 for 28 yards, then found Benjamin on back-to-back plays to get into the end zone.
The play was reviewed, but called in Miami's favor.
Wake Forest got off to a quick start, and Skinner had no trouble against an injured Miami defense. He had a touchdown pass in the first quarter and scored on a seven-yard run in the second to make it 17-0.
Miami's running game suffered because of the absence of tailback Javarris James. The oft-injured senior sat out the game because of hamstring issues, with Graig Cooper and Damien Berry only tallying 53 yards in his place.
Leonard Hankerson caught five passes for 97 yards, Thearon Collier 4-for-78, and Aldarius Johnson 3-for 74 for the Hurricanes, who were 4-for-14 on third down conversions.
The win was necessary for Miami, which fell to 18th in the AP rankings after losing 40-37 to Clemson last Saturday. The Hurricanes need to win out the rest of their season to even be considered for a solid bowl game in January.
The ACC winner gets an automatic bid into the Orange Bowl game, but that picture looks bleak for Miami unless Georgia Tech, Duke, and Virginia Tech lose ACC games.
