It's almost become comical to listen to the coaches in the Southeastern Conference criticize officials over penalties. But on the same weekend SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced he would fine or suspend coaches who criticized referees, Florida head coach Urban Meyer decided to push the issue. Friday, he was $30 thousand lighter in his pocketbook.
Commissioner Slive decided to fine Meyer after the Gators coach said referees missed a late hit on UF quarterback Tim Tebow during Florida's 41-17 victory over Georgia.
It's ironic that Meyer was the first coach fined, as most of the criticism of SEC referees has been from coaches who have been playing Florida. Previously, the SEC had reprimanded coaches for criticizing referees in public.
Much of the controversy over SEC coaches running their mouths has been centered on Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin. The first-year Volunteers coach has made a habit out of pushing the verbal volleys against Meyer and other coaches in the SEC since taking over the Tennessee program. Still, Kiffin has started building a program and could be a force to contend with as long as his father remains defensive coordinator.
