Sales Deductions Available On Your Tax Returns

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Florida taxpayers are entitled to a sales tax deduction in what the IRS considers "big ticket" items recently purchased, and it may be the last year to take advantage of it, because it's set to expire.

Mike Dobzinski of the Internal Revenue Service told CBS4 Consumer Reporter Al Sunshine, "You can still take a deduction for sales tax, and that's unique to Floridians because we don't pay a state income tax - so if you want to itemize deductions, you want to take advantage of that."

This would also include college-aged dependent credit, energy-saving improvements like new windows, and there are tax credits for hybrid motor vehicles.

Something also new this year for homeowners is a deduction on mortgage insurance premiums, which are often added to mortgages to cover a loan in case one dies.

"Not homeowners' insurance premiums but mortgage insurance premiums," added Dobzinksi. "You can take a deduction for those on your '07 return. That's new for this year."

Tomorrow is "Super-Saturday" when the IRS will be opening around the state with free taxpayer help.
