Tax Deadline Is Upon Us

MIAMI (CBS4) ―

The IRS income tax deadline is April 15th, and the tax agency said one of the more common ways for people to file is electronically seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.

Michael Dobzinski of the I.R. S. told CBS4 Consumer Reporter Al Sunshine,"It's through a paid preparer, a tax professional, you can file from your home computer, but it is through one of the software companies from whom you most likely bought the software from."

But computerized tax programs often make it easy to get tripped up by some common tax mistakes such as:  typing in an incorrect Social Security number or even a wrong address.

Dobzinski aded, "The biggest mistake we still see is in the Social Security numbers, or people transposing numbers, or not putting numbers down correctly, and even wrong numbers," which can all hold up the tax return.

The I.R.S. concerned that along with refund checks, there will be rebate checks, too, which will be targeted by scam artists over the Internet, via postal service or even on the phone.

Dobzinski reiterated another type of scam, "The caller will call up and say he has a check for you and that he's from the I.R.S., and if you provide certain information, most likely banking type information, he'll send you a check."
