Al's Last Minute Tax Tips 4 Your Money

CBS4's Tax Center

If You Don't File Today, You Still Have To File For An Extension

MIAMI (CBS4) ―

Individual tax rebates up to $600 a person, earned income tax credits for low income families that bring millions of dollars into local communities, that's what's at stake for taxpayers to meet Tuesday's midnight tax deadline.

First question: How easy it to still file electronically from the comfort of your home computer?

According to the IRS it's no trouble at all. The IRS's Mike Dobzinski says "the IRS has it on our site, a link called free file and that's for taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $54,000 or less."

If you still can't get all your paperwork together, you need a form 4868 and file an automatic extension postmarked before midnight on Tuesday.

Click Here to determine how much postage your return will need.

But remember, if you owe the IRS money, you'll still have to include an estimated tax payment and you'll still need to file a full return including any extra money you may still owe.

If you're still running late 5 local post offices will be accepting tax returns until midnight.

Open Until Midnight:

  • Norland Branch, 18640 NW 2nd Ave.
  • Miami General Mail Facility, 2200 NW 72nd Ave.
  • Snapper Creek Branch, 11000 SW 104th St.
  • Fort Lauderdale Main Office, 1900 West Oakland Park Blvd
  • South Florida Retail Unit, 16000 Pines Blvd.

And according to the IRS, late-filers are still making the same kinds of mistakes they see every year.

That's why the IRS advises to double check the math before sending in your tax return, double check you've written down the correct social-security numbers and don't forget to sign your tax return.

And remember, if you're in a rush for any possible tax refunds, e-filing your tax return and choosing direct deposit into your bank account can speed up your refund and get your money back to you in about 2 weeks or less.
