FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― More than 12-hundred homeowners in Broward County have received an apology from the county's tax collector's office in the mail after they received notices that they were delinquent in paying their property taxes and could lose their homes.

Problem was – they had paid their bills.

The Broward County Revenue Collection Division sent out the notices to more than 100-thousand residents who, according to their records, had missed the March 31st deadline to pay their property taxes without penalty. County officials say since they didn't have updated addresses for some of the residents who they sent notices to, some of the delinquent bills were matched to the wrong owner.

After receiving hundreds of calls from homeowners who said they had paid, workers at the tax collector's office tracked the problem to a "computer glitch."

They have since since sent out letters of apology to those who did pay their bills on time.

Delinquent property tax bills are often sold to investment firms who can force the property to be sold at auction if back taxes, interest and collection costs are not paid within 22 months.
