Death Row Inmate Will Be Executed Wednesday

Angel Nieves Diaz Will Be The 4th Execution In Florida This Year

He Killed a Miami Strip Club Manager 27 Years Ago

Execution Set For 6:00 p.m.
JACKSONVILLE (CBS4) ― Family members surrounded a Florida death row inmate Wednesday, likely for the last time.

Angel Nieves Diaz faces execution for fatally shooting a Miami topless club manager 27 years ago.

As his lawyer presses final appeals in the U.S. Supreme Court, Nieves' family members gathered at Florida State Prison near Starke to say their last goodbyes. They claim the state is getting ready to unjustly execute him.

His execution is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Funeral services are being planned for Nieves, who wants his body returned to his native Puerto Rico.

Officials there have written letters to Governor Jeb Bush asking him to stop the execution. Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, abolished capital punishment in 1929.

Barring a last-minute reprieve, Nieves would be the 21st man executed under the administration of Governor Jeb Bush and the 64th inmate to die since Florida resumed executions in 1979 after a 15-year hiatus. It would be the fourth execution this year.
