County Tentatively OKs More $ To Carnival Center

Life Is Not A Carnival For Performing Arts Center

lc
DOWNTOWN MIAMI (CBS4) ― The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners have tentatively approved a four million dollar boost to keep the financially beleaguered Carnival Center open through September.

The funding request needs to pass two more commission votes, which are scheduled next month and July.

If approved, it would bring the county's contribution total to the Carnival Center operations to $7.8 million for the year, which is more than double what the county budgeted.

Officials at the Miami performing arts center say monthly occupancy costs such as utilities, maintenance, security and insurance have skyrocketed.

County subsidies to the Carnival Center come from hotel bed taxes. The arts center is owned by the county, but it's managed by a private trust.
