Carnival Center Gets Extra Funding

dl
MIAMI (CBS4) ― Carnival Center officials got what they hoped for on Tuesday: $4.1-milllion.

The Miami-Dade County Commission approved a hotel bed-tax funding to keep the center afloat through September. It also increased the county's contribution to the center's operations to $7.8 million for the year, more than double the budgeted $3.75 million.

This approval comes after an independent trust that manages the county-owned facility committed errors in budget planning and failed to control costs, which could have stemmed an estimated $4.1 million deficit, according to a county report.

It was last month when the county manager, George Burgess, wrote that If there was no improvement in the management of the Carnival Center, then the county should consider new management or take control of operations at the $473 million center, which opened in October 2006.

Carnival Center CEO Michael Hardy said he accepted responsibility for the center's management shortcomings and is taking steps to reduce costs.
