Life Is Not A Carnival For Miami Art Center
jm
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Life is not a carnival for the new Carnival Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami.
It's running in red, more than $3 million in debt since it opened 5 months ago. Analysts had expected a deficit, but only by about $150 thousand.
The center's administrators blame weak ticket sales and budget miscalculations for the mounting debt. They say maintenance and utilities have been running twice the budgeted amount, and ticket sales are off by as much as 40-percent from projections.
While an independent trust is responsible for the center's budget, the county actually owns it. Commissioners will decided this fall who should be responsible for the center's budgetary shortfall.
