Investigation Underway Into Toppled Crane

AVENTURA (CBS4) ― One construction worker at an Aventura construction site is lucky to be alive after a 200 ton crane toppled over in an accident Monday night.

The crane toppled over at a construction site on the west side of Aventura Mall Monday night, hitting and breaking the leg of the worker. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported him to a local hospital to get treated.

If it weren't because the crane toppled to the front instead of to its side, the lives of dozens of workers at the site could have been put in danger.

Inspectors with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have been called out to the scene.

Some witnesses on scene told CBS4's Tiffani Helberg that a mechanical failure may have caused the accident.

Late Tuesday night, crews managed to set the crane upright.
