FIU's Budget Cuts Will Turn Away Students

sr
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBS4) ― FIU President Modesto A. Maidique announced this week that admissions and non-faculty hiring will be frozen, and some programs may be eliminated to meet a four to ten percent state budget cut.

"In practice, this means that perfectly qualified students will be denied admission to FIU," said Maidique.

The budget cut comes as a result of lower than expected tax revenues for the state.

As a money saving measure, earlier this week the Florida Board of Governors, instituted the first-ever system-wide freshmen enrollment cap.

"The situation is critical," said Maidique, who has seen numerous budget cuts in his 20 years as president. "After years of cuts, we are at the breaking point. In order to remain true to our educational mission and in line with our commitment to quality, we are going to have to turn away students."

FIU will need to identify a minimum budget cut of $9.4 million of its $234 million recurring state appropriation.

These cuts, together with one of the lowest tuitions in the country, have led to the second-worse student-to-faculty ratio in the nation. FIU has one of the highest ratios in the state, with 38.8 students per full time faculty member.
