The University of Miami campus held a ceremony to remember the fallen in the Virginia Tech massacre Wednesday night.
Hundreds of students gathered around 'the rock', in the heart of their Coral Gables campus, holding candles and wearing UM and Virginia Tech Colors. Students prayed as school leaders spoke.
"Tonight we are Virginia Tech," said UM President Donna Shalala. "We are their students, their faculty, their staff and their community."
Earlier in the day Florida International University and Barry University conducted their memorial ceremonies. FIU held their event at "the pit" area of the University Park's Graham Center and another at the Panther Square in the Wolfe University Center on the Biscayne Bay campus. FIU's students and faculty, like so many campuses around the country, expressed their solidarity with the Virginia Tech community.
Some explained how senseless it was; others how concerned they were over security matters and if enough precautions were being taken to prevent a repeat of what happened in Virginia.
At Barry University, ceremonies took place late in the day and again in the evening.
