Three men were each sentenced to 12 years in prison today for their part in a Cuban migrant smuggling trip that resulted in a woman's death.
A federal judge sentenced Amil Gonzalez Rodriguez, Rolando Gonzalez Delgado and Heinrich Castillo Diaz for their roles in the July Eighth smuggling. The Coast Guard stopped their boat crammed with 31 migrants.
A jury found Gonzalez Rodriguez guilty of smuggling in October, but acquitted him of charges involving the woman's death. Castillo Diaz and Gonzalez Delgado had each pleaded guilty to a 68-count indictment.
The trio of smugglers tried to outrun officials in choppy waters to reach the Florida Keys. Anay Machado Gonzalez, one of the migrants on the boat, died after suffering a severe head injury during the chase.
