The Fort Lauderdale NAACP wants a teenager, who is accused of beating three homeless men, to be tried as an adult. One of those men died.
Thomas Daugherty, 17, of Plantation, has been charged with murder, but not as an adult, which would carry more severe penalties. So the civil rights organization is asking Broward State Attorney Michael Satz to prosecute Daugherty as an adult. He's being held without bond at a juvenile detention facility.
The man who died, Norris Gaynor was black. So is Jacques Pierre, 58, who is from Haiti.
His beating, caught on video by surveillance cameras located out FAU, was seen around the world. All the suspects in the beatings are white.
The two other suspects, William ''Billy'' Ammons, of Fort Lauderdale, and Brian Hooks, of Plantation, remain in the Broward County Jail without bond. The teens, both 18, face murder charges in the death of Norris Gaynor and aggravated battery charges in the videotaped beating of Pierre. They are also charged in the beating of Raymond Perez, 49.
The three homeless men were attacked in the middle of the night, Jan. 12, as they slept in separate locations in Fort Lauderdale.
The two surviving victims, Pierre and Perez, have both been released from Broward General Medical Center.
The NAACP press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Broward County Courthouse, 201 SE 6th St., Fort Lauderdale.
