MIAMI (CBS4) ―
A show of support Friday for the wife of slain Miami-Dade Police Officer Jose Somohano as one of the suspects connected to her husband's accused killer appeared in court. Also in the courtroom, two police officers who were wounded in the attack.
Shawn LaBeet's girlfriend, Renee D'Angelo, was the only one of half a dozen suspects charged with accessory after the fact, who appeared in court Friday as the judge set a trial date of January 22nd.
She was also assigned a public defender by Judge Rosa Rodriguez.
The other five suspects are Alba Bello, 47, her boyfriend Lazaro Guardiola, 35, and Bello's son, Alain Gonzalez, 24. Also, LaBeet's brother Shane and his nephew Jaleel Torres, 22, who is charged with resisting an officer with violence.
An attorney for Bello, Guardiola and Gonzalez also asked the judge Friday for a bond reduction for the trio. Each is being held on $250-thousand but the judge denied the motion because they cannot prove the bond money is legitimate.
All of them face charges for allegedly helping accused cop killer Shawn LaBeet escape police after he opened fire at officers with an AK-47 assault rifle in Southwest Miami-Dade on September 13th, killing officer Somohano and injuring three other officers.
Officer Somohano's wife, Elizabeth, was emotional outside the courtroom Friday morning and was surrounded by dozens of police officers, friends, family and two of the officers who were also shot by LaBeet.
Officer Christopher Carlin and Officer Tomas Tundidor were both grazed by bullets that day in September but have since recovered.
The third officer, Jody Wright, was shot in the leg which shattered her knee and she is still recovering.
PBA President John Rivera told CBS4'S Liv Davalos that the brotherhood of police officers will always be there for Elizabeth Somohano. "She's still going through tough times, it's going to be a very long healing process for her."
Shawn LaBeet's girlfriend, Renee D'Angelo was charged with being an accessory after the fact because she gave a false name for LaBeet while police were searching for him, which caused delays in the investigation. She told police his name was "Kevin Wehner", which was an alias he was using.
Earlier this week, Shane LaBeet's bond was reduced from $250-thousand to $80-thousand.
Police say that after killing Somohano and wounding the other three officers, Shawn LaBeet drove to Alba Bello's home at 12914 SW 202nd St., where he dumped his white Honda in the backyard. Then, Bello, Guardiola and Gonzalez drove LaBeet to a wooded spot near the Everglades, where his brother, Shane, picked him up and drove him to his nephew's home in Miami Gardens.
From there, it's not known how LaBeet made it to Pembroke Pines, where he was shot and killed by a Miami-Dade Police tactical team about 12 hours after the original police shooting.
