MIAMI (CBS4) ― CBS4 anchor Maggie Rodriguez has a new assignment in the big apple. She's been named a co-anchor of "The Saturday Early Show".

The appointment is effective June 1.

"In addition to her anchoring and reporting experience, Maggie has the ability to connect with viewers because of her remarkable warmth and authenticity," said Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports.
"She has the perfect set of qualities to become an outstanding morning news anchor."

"I'm excited to welcome Maggie to THE EARLY SHOW family," said Steve Friedman, Vice President, Morning Broadcasts, CBS News. "She's a terrific addition to the group, and I look forward to our viewers getting to meet Maggie."

Tracy Smith, who has co-anchored the SATURDAY EARLY SHOW since August 2005, will continue as National Correspondent for THE EARLY SHOW, but will add reporting duties for the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC and will contribute cover stories and other reports to CBS NEWS SUNDAY MORNING. Rodriguez' permanent co-anchor will be named at a later date.

"Naturally, we will miss Maggie," said Shaun McDonald, President/General Manager, CBS South Florida Television Station Group. "In her years here at the station, she's made an indelible impact as an anchor, as an ambassador to the community and as a member of our CBS4 and My 33 family. At the same time, we're thrilled that she's getting this well-deserved opportunity. It's a credit to her, and, I believe, to our stations that the Network has recognized the caliber of talent we've nurtured here."

Rodriguez has anchored the 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM newscasts at WFOR-TV, the CBS Owned station in Miami, since August 2000.

While there, she reported on and anchored coverage of a wide range of major news events, including many hurricanes and, from New York, the one-year anniversary of 9/11. Rodriguez also was first on the air with coverage of the transfer of power in Cuba from Fidel Castro to his brother, Raul. Ultimately, the newscast received an RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for its coverage of that story.

Before that, she was anchor of the midday news and of a weekend magazine show at KABC-TV Los Angeles (1994-2000). Rodriguez also was a field reporter and covered a wide array of stories, including earthquakes, mudslides and the O.J. Simpson trial.

She served as a reporter for the Univision Network (1991-1994) in Miami. Rodriguez' career in journalism began at WLTV Miami (1989-90), a Univision-owned station, where she was an associate producer, field producer and assignment editor.

She has received six Emmy Awards and two RTNDA Murrow Awards.

Rodriguez' alma mater, the University of Miami, awarded her the first-ever "Alpha Epsilon Rho Professional of the Year Award," its top honor for professionals in the communication industry. She also is the recipient of the Hispanic Heritage Council's prestigious "Young Hispanic Leadership Award" for professional accomplishments and community service.

Rodriguez was born in Miami and grew up in South Florida. She attended American University in Washington, D.C. and was graduated from the University of Miami in 1991 with a degree in broadcast journalism and Spanish. Rodriguez and her husband have a daughter.
