Next Surgery Scheduled for Oct. 5.

by Dr. Sean Kenniff
MIAMI (CBS4/AP) ― A Haitian teenager whose face was once distorted by a 16-pound tumor-like growth made her first appearance at Jackson Memorial Hospital Thursday.

Fifteen-year-old Marlie Casseus has had three surgeries, and is scheduled for one more on October 5th at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Marlie's features were severely misshapen by the growth that was caused by a rare genetic condition that causes bone to swell and become jelly-like. She was unable to eat or speak when she arrived in the United States in last September, and doctors inserted a tube to help her breathe. Thanks to the help of the community who donated money for the operation, she's getting a second chance.

Her last surgery was a nearly nine-hour procedure where doctors reconstructed parts of her face. She can now breathe through her nose and partially close her mouth.

Thursday, her mother thanked the community for their help as the upbeat girl made an appearance and waved to the camera as she sported a more normal looking face.

Two previous surgeries were required to remove the swollen mass from Marlie's face.
