Haitian Girl With Huge Tumor Undergoes 3rd Surgery

MIAMI (CBS4/AP) ― Doctors will hold a news conference Friday afternoon following the third surgery on a Haitian teen who had a 16-pound tumor on her face.

Marlie Casseus' is hospitalized in critical but stable condition following Thursday's reconstructive surgery on her face.

A 16-pound growth had engulfed Casseus' face before she came to Miami for surgery in December. The growth was caused by a rare genetic disease that causes bone to swell and become jelly-like. The surgery she needed was not available in her native Haiti.

Marlie required two surgeries to remove the mass. She underwent an eight hour, 40-minute surgery at Holtz Children's Hospital in Miami Thursday so surgeons could reconstruct her nasal bridge and upper lip, and correct the separation of her eyes.

Doctors say Marlie will probably need additional cosmetic surgeries.

The International Kids Fund is sponsoring her medical treatment and seeking additional funds to help pay for those surgeries.
