Despite a Miami Police protest that created more traffic delays than expected for the first night of the Carnival Center For The Performing Arts opening celebrations, Thursday night was a star-studded success.
Thursday night marked the beginning of a four day grand opening extravaganza to celebrate the opening of the arts complex which houses an opera house as well as a concert hall with 22,000 seats. The center has been hailed by critics for bringing Miami its first world class arts and culture destination.
Thursday night's party was highlighted by a concert attended by 150 performers. VIP's such as Emilio Estefan, Actor and Performer Andy Garcia, Quincy Jones, Bernadette Peters all made grand entrances on the red carpet.
The pre-planned street closures were worsened in the afternoon when dozens of police officers demanding better pay protested, creating traffic clots all over the Downtown area.
Dignitaries such as Mayor Manny Diaz and Carlos Alvarez were present, along with Sanford and Dolores Ziff, for whom the Opera House was named.
