Northwestern High School Named A New Head Coach
CBS
Billy Rolle was named Northwestern's football coach Friday morning in a private meeting with the team at the school's auditorium, according to
CBS4 news partner,
The Miami Herald.Northwestern principal Charles Hankerson said of Rolle, ''We hired an educator, a real good teacher.''
Last week when Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Rudy Crew announced the firing of head coach Roland Smith and the rest of the varsity staff from their coaching positions, he also instituted a new no-nonsense policy, as well as raised academic standards for Northwestern's players for this coming season.
Those firings came after it was learned last year's star running back, Antwain Easterling, was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior after police say he had consensual but unlawful sex with a 14-year-old girl at the school on Sept. 16, 2006. Easterling was allowed to continue to play, including in the December state title game.
This will be Rolle's second stint as Northwestern's coach. He led the Bulls to a state championship in 1998 and was the defensive coordinator in 1995 under Willie Goldsmith when Northwestern won its first title.
''The kids seemed to respond well to the announcement,'' said Rolle, who broke the ice during the announcement by reciting Northwestern's alma mater.
Rolle is the only coach in Miami-Dade County history to lead two different schools to state football titles. He led Killian in 2004 to the Class 6A state title and was most recently at Miami Central this spring.
