Group Wants Pit Bulls Legalized In Dade County

by David Sutta
MIAMI (CBS4) ― For almost 20 years Pit bulls have been banned in Miami-Dade County, featured in hundreds of vicious dog bite stories and labeled a danger to society. However, animal activists want to change this.

Dahilia Canes is one of these people, and she demands the ban be repealed.

"It is a bona fide witch hunt, a K9 holocaust, need I go on," said Canes. "You're killing innocent animals. These dogs are not dangerous. You cannot generalize a breed."

Cane is the owner of a pit bull, currently living in Palm Beach because of the law. She believes the ordinance is targeting the wrong group.

"Do not blame the dog," said Canes. "It is human error. It's not the dog's fault. It's not in their breed."

Canes, along with others, presented a petition to county commissioners Tuesday, but it fell on deaf ears.

"There have been many instances in Dade County that there were severe attacks by Pit bulls," said Dr. Sara Pizano, Director of Miami-Dade's Animal Shelter.

Many of the commissioners are siding with Pizano.

"It's a public safety issue, so that if animals are euthanized that might not bite it's in the name of protecting the public against those pit bulls that would bite."

"It is not only unfair, it is a false sense of security to the general public," said animal behaviorist Edel Miedes.

Miedes believes the fear of pit bulls is a myth that's gotten out of control.

"A dog doesn't pose a danger to society simply because of its breed," said Miedes. "In other words, a dog is not born a pit bull and all the sudden it's a danger to society."
