Former Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams formally applied again with the NFL on Monday to let him play football.
His agent Leigh Steinberg reported to
CBS4 news partner
The Miami Herald "Ricky is extremely excited about the prospect of playing in the NFL again and hopeful for a positive response."
Williams still has a contract with the Dolphins, but the team has not made a decision whether they would take him back even if the league decides in his favor. Coach Cam Cameron would not comment on Williams' request.
Williams' reinstatement request was denied because of a failed drug test. According to the newspaper, he will need to wait several weeks before the league decides if his summer intent of kicking his drug problems was effective enough for another shot in the NFL.
Under the league's substance abuse program, when a player applies for reinstatement the doctors have up to 45 days to submit their report and recommendation to the commissioner. He then has up to 15 days to make a decision. That means the process could take up to 60 days from the day Williams applies to be reinstated.
Williams spent an extended vacation in Australia and India during a yearlong retirement in 2004. He played in the Canadian Football League in 2006.
