Royal Caribbean Orders Largest Cruise Ship Ever

"Genesis" Price: More Than $1 billion

NEW YORK (CBS4 News) ― Royal Caribbean International has ordered the world's largest and most expensive cruise ship.

The contract price for the new ship, designated Project Genesis, is more than $1 billion "making it the most valuable ship ever ordered in the history of commercial shipbuilding," according to Norway's ship building giant Aker Yards, which has won the contract to build the new floating city.

With an expected delivery date of Fall 2009, the ship will accommodate 5,400 guests and will weigh 220,000 gross registered tons.

At 1,180 feet long, 154 feet wide and 240 feet high, Project Genesis will incorporate bold design and significant technical advancements over today's cruise ships.

It'll be 43% bigger than the "Freedom of the Seas", which is still being build and will debut in June.

"Project Genesis truly is a remarkable ship. Its bold design, daring innovations and technological advancements will delight our existing cruisers and help us draw in new ones." said Royal Caribbean Chairman and CEO Richard Fain.
