MIAMI (CBS4) ― Its high is supposed to be more potent than marijuana, and for that reason Miami-Dade Commissioners want it to be illegal.

A CBS4 News special report led Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz to lead the charge in making the salvia illegal. The plant is sold in many smoke shops and is legal to smoke, becoming very popular with college students.

"It is a drug that is sold over the counter that basically has the same effect as LSD," he said in a public meeting. "I was not aware of it until Channel 4 did the report and I thank them for it."

A Miami-Dade County Commission committee agreed on Tuesday to make a resolution proposing that the state of Florida ban the plant as an illegal substance. Next week the full commission will hear the issue and vote on it, before it is sent to Tallahassee.
