Residents Want South Miami Commissioner Recalled

by David Sutta
SOUTH MIAMI (CBS4) ― A petition was started Tuesday in South Miami to recall Commissioner Jay Beckman, as some in the community are alleging he is a racist.

The petition submitted by the Concerned Clergy and Citizens Coalition will have 30 days from today to gather 1,000 signatures to move the recall. The petition was announced following a police escorted march by the commission building this evening by over 100 citizens.

The premise for the petition is Beckman's vote of No on an ordinance to repeal a 1928 segregation law. Beckman contends that federal law, which supersedes local laws, makes the repeal meaningless. He's not against the repeal, just the wording of it.

Beckman issued a statement at the beginning of the meeting to the masses noting his track record, his support of a repeal, and his belief this repeal is about getting him off the board so zoning issues can move forward.
