Mother's Suit Asks School Bullying To Stop
Lawsuit Doesn't Seek Money, Only Relief Of Son's Pain
DL
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
Mary Bradford, a Coral Springs mother, is suing the Broward school board, arguing that her 12-year-old son has endured much pain and suffering when bullied by other students at Sawgrass Springs Middle School.
The family is not seeking monetary relief, save for the attorney and court costs, but wants some kind of emotional compensation to her son. The suit, filed on Tuesday, in Broward Circuit Court, asked the school to begin isolating bullies by conducting "behavioral interventions". according to the Sun-Sentinel.
The suit also asks the school board to be active in security and provide her son "the means to attend school in a safe and appropriate educational environment."
"He came up to me for one incident and said, 'Mommy what's wrong with me?'," said Bradford.
Bradford says the child's reporting of the problem to teachers has only made matters worse.
"He told me that he's not going to say anything because everybody's calling him a snitch," said Bradford.
The suit claims her child has been pushed, hit, called names and threatened, and even had his glasses tossed to the ground and stomped on.
The School Board's Code of Student Conduct prohibits bullying but specific consequences for bullying are not listed in the code.
