Butterworth Promises New Open Attitude At DCF

dg
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― The new head of the Department of Children and Families is promising a new atmosphere of openness as the agency tries to combat the perception that it hides its problems behind tight lips and a negative image.

That's the word from at the agency's new Secretary Bob Butterworth, a former Attorney General and Broward State Attorney.

Butterworth says that he doesn't want the agency to continue to be called beleaguered, dysfunctional and troubled whenever it's written about. He says one way to gain back trust is to acknowledge mistakes.

In a complete turnaround of thinking at the agency, Butterworth joined The News-Press of Fort Myers in asking a judge to release records in a southwest Florida abuse case. On another day, he called a press conference to disclose possible abuse cases at a DCF-contracted facility that houses mentally ill and disabled juvenile offenders.
