TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ―
Round 2 of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test were released Wednesday and the news isn't that good.
Most of Florida's high school juniors and seniors who had to re-take the 10th grade math and reading portions of the FCAT failed to pass the tests. Only 15 percent of the nearly 26-thousand seniors taking the reading test passed, while 26 percent of the nearly 11-thousand taking the math test passed.
Results for 3rd graders who took the reading portion of the test were also released.
Overall, the number of 3rd graders reading at or above grade level slipped this year while math scores continued to show improvement. 69 percent scored at or above grade level in reading, compared to 75 percent a year ago.
Miami Dade's 3rd grade reading scores dropped from 71 percent to 63 percent for those who could read at, or above, grade level. Broward's 3rd grader scores dropped from 75 percent to 68 percent.
Scores for the math portion fared a bit better. Statewide, 74 percent scored at or above grade level, compared to 72 percent last year. In Miami Dade, scores jumped from 69 percent last year to 70 percent this year. Broward saw a similar increase from 77 percent last year to 78 percent this year.
Results of the tests are used to determine whether third graders can advance to fourth grade and whether high school seniors can graduate.
Last month, FCAT results were released for 4th, 8th, and 10th graders who took the writing and essay portions of the test. Most grades showed an improvement over 2006 scores. Also, Broward 4th, 8th, 10th graders, and 4th graders in Miami Dade outperformed the rest of the state.
