Final FCAT Scores Are A Mixed Bag
jm
(CBS4)
The last batch of FCAT scores is out and they are pretty much a mixed bag across Miami Dade and Broward counties.
Overall, this year students in nearly all grades improved their reading, science and math scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.
In Miami Dade, 63 percent of third graders read at grade level or above. In Broward, 68 percent read at grade level or above. In math, 78 percent passed the test in Broward, 70 percent in Miami Dade.
In Miami Dade, 64 percent of fourth graders scored at grade level or above on the reading test. In Broward, 68 percent of fourth graders did the same. In math, 67 percent of fourth graders in Miami Dade made the grade, in Broward 75 percent passed.
Overall, Broward's reading scores were up or same in every level except fourth and sixth grades. In Miami Dade, scores in both reading and math remained about the same, or did slightly better, except for tenth graders. Just 34 percent of sophomores in Broward and 27 percent in Miami-Dade are reading at grade level. Statewide results rose at all levels in the three subjects over last year, except for falling scores in third grade reading and sixth grade math and reading.
Third graders must pass the reading portion of the FCATs to be promoted and high school students must do so to earn a standard diploma. Test results are also used to determine whether teachers receive merit pay.
