New Marlins Stadium Bill Passes Through Council

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― A bill that would provide state funding for a new stadium for the Florida Marlins has sailed through the Economic Expansion and Infrastructure Council with only one "no" vote.

But there's still much convincing to be done in the Legislature. Some lawmakers don't think it's appropriate to spend state money on professional sports teams in a year with a tight budget and many competing priorities.

The plan would provide the remaining $30-million dollars in an existing agreement between the Marlins, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami for an almost $500 million-dollar retractable roof ballpark.

Supporters argue the state subsidy will be rewarded with economic development surrounding the new ballpark and increased tax revenue.

A competing plan would provide money for all professional sports teams and has a greater impact on state coffers.
