The father of injured Miami-Dade police officer Jody Wright spoke to reporters outside Jackson Memorial Ryder Trauma Center on Friday, saying his daughter's outlook is positive.
"They've been able to save her leg at this point," Dennis Dalley said. "We're confident she will be able to walk again, but it's going to be a long haul."
Hospital officials say the officer is still in intensive care.
Dalley planned a trip to Miami on Thursday from Jamaica, when he got a call as he was about to board his flight that his 31-year-old daughter was shot and undergoing surgery.
Paramedics rushed the Miami-Dade police officer with a massive injury to her leg from a gunshot wound.
Wright joined the force a year and a half ago and works for the Cutler Ridge area.
Her father says she knew the dangers.
"Two months ago I spoke to her and she said what will be will be," said Dalley.
"My heart is in it and I've chosen this field," said Wright to her father.
Her father added that she excelled at the academy, and her family was very proud of her. Wright is loved by her peers and some swarmed to the hospital while some joined together to pray.
Dalley told
CBS4 that Wright had a close bond with the officer who died on the shootout, Jose Somohano.
"My heart goes out to their family I know how they feel. I know how upset we are and we know she's alive so it's a very sympathetic feeling knowing they don't have their loved one with them," said Dalley.
Also today, a blood mobile arrived outside Ryder in honor of all the four officers that were shot, making the community aware of the need to donate.
