FBI Agent Cross Examined In Liberty City 7 Trial

jm
MIAMI (CBS4) ― The lead FBI agent is expected to be cross-examined Thursday in the trial of the so called "Liberty City 7."

The seven men from the Miami area are accused of plotting to destroy the 110-story Sears Tower in Chicago and bomb several federal buildings in the Miami as part of a war aimed at overthrowing the U.S. government.

Wednesday, jurors watched as a surveillance tape was played which showed the leader of the group, Narseal Batiste, meeting with a paid FBI informant who was posing as an al Qaeda terrorist. On the videotape, Batiste allegedly said he needed funds to raise an "Islamic army" to fight a guerrilla war. He also reportedly said he needed boots, black uniforms and machine guns for his soldiers.

Defense attorneys plan to argue the men said whatever the informant wanted to hear in order to receive money which they planned to use for their church.

They face up to 70 years in prison if convicted of all four charges, which include conspiracy to levy war against the United States and providing material support to al Qaeda.
