Carbon Monoxide Alarms Donated To Miami Dade Fire

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― An invisible danger could be lurking in your home this hurricane season that could kill you in your sleep.

Every year during storm season people use generators to power appliances, and gas or charcoal grills to cook, when their electricity gets knocked out. When used improperly, these appliances pose a risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

To raise awareness of this risk, Kidde, the world's largest fire safety manufacturer is teaming up with Janelle's Wishing Well Foundation to donate 300 Carbon Monoxide alarms to the Miami Dade Fire Rescue Department.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report in 2004 and 2005, more than 200 Floridians died from CO poisoning linked to storm-related power outages. All of those poisonings were due to the improper use of generators.

During the last state legislative session, a bill was passed that will require all new residences that have fossil fuel-burning appliances, or an attached garage, to install CO alarms near sleeping areas. The law goes into effect July 1, 2008.
