Florida Makes Key Lime Pie Official State Pie
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4/AP) ―
The efforts of a few dozen Broward County residents paid off Saturday, when the Key Lime Pie formally became the official State Pie of Florida.
The tasty and tart treat popular in the Sunshine State was added to Florida's list of official state symbols Saturday.
A new law that will take effect Saturday makes key lime pie the official pie of Florida. Bids by others outside of South Florida with sweet potato and pecan pies were rejected.
It all started when thirty Broward County residents signed a petition in March to defend the dessert, and many computer bloggers also logged in to share their opinions.
The tart dessert will join the ranks of other official state symbols including the Florida panther (animal), mockingbird (bird), sabal palm (tree), orange blossom (flower), manatee (freshwater marine mammal), porpoise (saltwater marine mammal), alligator (reptile), moonstone (gem) and orange juice (beverage).
