Naugle's Gathers Support Against Public Gay Sex
DL
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
The battle between gay rights group and the mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Jim Naugle, heated up as they discussed a new way to stop gay sex in public areas.
Representatives from HealthyPublicPlaces.com and Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle addressed Broward County's public health crisis at a press conference Tuesday morning outside Fort Lauderdale City Hall.
HealthyPublicPlaces.com is a coalition of local and national organizations formed recently to support Mayor Naugle and promote policies to protect the community from behaviors that threaten public health and public morals.
During the briefing, Naugle discussed Fort Lauderdale's public health crisis and proposed measures to make local public restrooms and parks safe and healthy for all members of the community
Naugle surrounded himself by conservative Christian leaders on his crusade against gay sex in public bathrooms.
As radio talk show Janet Folger took the microphone, a gay rights leader could not hold back and screamed at her: "I' am a person living with AIDS and what you're saying is wrong. How you're demonizing people is wrong."
Those who supported the mayor carried signs and handed out bumper stickers saying, "Mayor Naugle is right."
"The mayor is doing what most families want. We don't want to be known as the aids capital in the country," said Folger, "We want to be known as a place that has, well, healthy public places."
CBS4's Ted Scouten said no one seems to be able to produce the stats proving all the gay sex in public. The mayor says there have been eight arrests over the past two years and the police department says there have been only two in three years.
The mayor questions the official county number on health statistics.
"I think that the Broward County health people because of their constraints with the Broward County government are interested in being politically correct," said Nugle "I think the people who are here are more interested in saving lives."
A gay rights group said they plan on working with civil rights groups in Broward County and asking the governor to sensor the mayor.
