MIAMI (CBS4 News) ―
A family of five was found dead in their home Sunday morning in Miami from what police believe was carbon monoxide poisoning.
The body of 33-year-old Maitea Perez as found in a sports-utility vehicle still running in the garage, police said. Officers found four other bodies, two children believed to be the step-children of Perez, and two adults, Robert Perez and an unidentified victim inside the four-bedroom home located at 148 Southwest 154 Court southwest Miami.
A preliminary investigation by detectives indicated that each victim died from carbon monoxide poisoning.Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Nelda Fonticiella said, detectives had to let the fumes escape from the home before being able to begin their investigation.
CBS4's
Marybel Rodriguez reported that the mother of one of the victim's dropped her son off at his father's home to spend the weekend with him. She found out Sunday evening that her son had died from what police believe to be carbon monoxide poisoning.
Police said they were still determining if the deaths were accidental or part of a murder-suicide plot.
"Oh my God," said Feliza Thomas, who lives in a home just behind the one where the family was found. "Their children were very young. They had a little white dog. We would say hello to each other all the time. They never messed with anybody."
Carlotta Loero, who lives next door to the scene, said the family was polite but tended to keep to itself. "It appeared that maybe they didn't like associating with the neighbors too much, so we gave them their space," said Loero, who added that her dog often played with the dog owned by the family next door.
Police were notified when a family member was unable to get in contact with the family since Friday. Officers went to investigate the scene and found the bodies.
The case is still under investigation.
