Swimming Hall Of Fame Remembers Gerald Ford

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Football wasn't President Gerald Ford's only passion; he had an affinity for swimming and made it a point to promote the sport at the swimming hall of fame in Ft. Lauderdale.

In 1977, less than a year after leaving the White House, Ford paid a visit to the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF), located in Ft. Lauderdale. Ford, promoted the sport as a great way to exercise during his term, and was considered one of the biggest cheerleaders for the ISHOF.

"All through his years at Michigan it was football, football, football, but swimming happened to be one of those exercises that he liked doing," said Bob Duenkel of the ISHOF. "It relieved stress and it was good for his body."

Ford made many friends in Ft. Lauderdale because of this, who remember him to this day. For this reason he was made an honorary member of the hall of fame and a tribute for him is already underway because of this in Ft. Lauderdale.
