Major Crackdown On Drivers Who Don't 'Move Over'

MIRAMAR (CBS4) ― Ignorance was not bliss for more than 3 dozen drivers in Miramar who didn't 'move over'.

The 'move over' law in Florida requires drivers to move one lane over when they see a law enforcement vehicle, emergency vehicle, or tow truck on the side of the road.

Thursday morning Miramar Police and the Florida Highway Patrol put drivers to the test at the intersection of Southwest 129th Avenue and Miramar Parkway. They chose that intersection because it's a wide 6 lane section of the parkway with plenty of room for drivers to move over.

Miramar Police Sgt. Peter Bermuda said they had a very busy morning writing ticket after ticket to drivers who either weren't familiar with the law, or just didn't remember 'moving over' was the law.

Miramar Police and the FHP remind all drivers to take this law very seriously. Earlier this year, Broward Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Seguin was killed after he was struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop on Interstate 595.

"On an interstate highway where we primarily are," said FHP Sgt. Mark Wysocky "we're only one or two feet from cars doing 70 to 80 mph and we need to work safely on the side of the road."

In about two hours, Miramar Police officers wrote 40 tickets at $117 each. They're promising more of these street side campaigns in the future.
