MIAMI (CBS4) ―
The former principal of Miami Dade's Northwestern Senior High has been indicted by a grand jury for his part in covering up a sex scandal at the school.
According to the State Attorney's Office, which released the Grand Jury report Wednesday afternoon, Dwight Bernard has been charged with two counts of official misconduct. He came under investigation after it was discovered that he knew about the sex scandal involving a star football player and a 14-year old female student for six weeks and took no action.
Immediately after being charged, Dwight Bernard turned himself into the county jail where he was booked on those two counts of official misconduct.
A 1999 state law requires adults who come in routine contact with children, such as teachers, principals and doctors to report suspected sexual abuse to authorities.
The football player, 18-year old Antwain Easterling, was arrested and charged. Released on bail he went on to lead Northwestern to a state football title in December. He later entered a pretrial diversion program that will wipe his record clean of the charge of lewd and lascivious battery, a felony.
