More questions than answers Tuesday after a former FBI agent from South Florida vanished on a trip to Iran.
Co-workers describe him as highly intelligent, possessed amazing language skills, and definitely had a successful career with FBI where he worked primarily domestic organized crime cases.
Now family and friends of 59-year old Robert Levinson, from Coral Springs, are worried about what may have happened to him.
Levinson left on a business trip a couple of weeks ago and has not been heard from since. The last time anyone saw Levinson was off the Southern coast of Iran in the Islands of Kish.
Concerned about his well being, Levinson's family contacted the State Department who said he traveling as a private citizen, and was not working for the government.
"There is an American citizen, private citizen, who is in Iran on private business about whom we're pursuing a welfare case. We're sending an inquiry as to whether or not they have any information on his whereabouts," said Sean McCormack, Assistant Secretary of State.
Levinson, who retired from the FBI ten years ago, was believed to be in Iran working for an independent author and producer trying to set up interviews.
The State Department said there is no indication, that whatever happened to him, he's being held against his will.
