Special Session: Committees Approve New PIP

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ―
Florida's mandatory no-fault personal injury protection insurance, or PIP, would return in February under a measure approved unanimously by a Senate committee.
The measure has also received approval from the House Insurance Committee.
The state's no-fault personal injury protection law expired Monday. It required drivers to have coverage for medical care costs if there is an accident. It also protected drivers from lawsuits over who was at fault in most cases.
Opponents of the law, including many large insurance companies, say it needs to be scrapped because the system is rife with fraud.

Miami Herald reports Representative Ellyn Bogdanoff, a Republican from Fort Lauderdale who sponsored the bill in the House, said Wednesday that the Office of Insurance Regulation and several major insurers have said they can't retool their systems more quickly to handle the return of the no-fault provisions.
