Three men appeared in bond court Monday, all charged in connection with the shooting of two Broward County sheriff's deputies during a traffic stop, killing one. The Broward Sheriff's Office held a press conference Monday afternoon where the wife and doctor of injured deputy, Corey Carbocci spoke.
Carbocci's wife, Nildy Carbocci, said at the news conference, "there were angels with him that night."
Eloyn D. Ingraham, 28, of Sunrise, was being held without bond on charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. Officials say the suspect has a long criminal record and is a native of the Bahamas. Bahamian police have been brought on the case to aid in the investigation.
Two others suspects, identified as Andre Delancy and Bernard Forbes, have been charged with accessories after the fact and the judge set bond at $50,000 for each of them.
Ingraham was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over at the Versailles Gardens Condominium by Deputy Brian Tephford late Saturday after Tephford suspected the vehicle was stolen because it had the wrong tag, Sheriff Ken Jenne said.
Tephford called for back up minutes after making the traffic stop and Deputy Corey Carbocci was dispatched to the scene. Shortly after, both deputies were fired upon but neither had a chance to fire his own weapon, Jenne said.
"It would appear that they were taken totally by surprise by this shooting," Jenne said.
Carbocci, who was wearing a protective vest when he was shot four times, was in stable condition at Broward General Medical Center on Monday, hospital officials said. The 37-year-old was expected to make a full recovery.
Tephford, who was shot twice, was not wearing a protective vest, Jenne said. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to officials, Tephford signed a waiver for not having to wear the protective gear and was well aware of the risks in not doing so.
Ingraham escaped the scene, but was captured at a Dania Beach motel about 4 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.
Authorities believe Ingraham was the sole gunman, but it is possible he fired more than one weapon, Jenne said. Two other men, Delancy and Forbes, seen on surveillance video with Ingraham running past security cameras at a Sunrise strip mall, are now charged in the case as well as accessories after the fact.
The woman driving the car Tephford pulled over was not taken into custody. It was determined the car was not stolen, Jenne said.
Tephford, 34, a six-year veteran of the sheriff's office, is survived by young twins and a 4-year-old daughter, authorities
said.
Funeral arrangements for Deputy Tephford are as follows:Thursday, November 16, 2006 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at T. M. There will be a memorial service on Friday, November 17, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Au-Rene Theatre, 201 SW 5th Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale.
