FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
While they may sound like a good idea, utility operators and environmentalists say year-round water restrictions are not the answer to solving South Florida's water problems.
The South Florida Water Management District has been holding a series of public forums to discuss three-day-a-week watering limits even when there is no drought. The idea is to promote water conservation.
Utility operators say cutting back on water use won't help if there aren't enough places to store the extra water. Environmentalists agree, and say the limits also don't teach residents to landscape drought-resistant, native plants instead of thirsty lawns.
A persistent drought forced South Florida water management officials to impose one-day-a-week watering restrictions. Other parts of the state already have year-round, two- or three-day-a-week watering limits.
