Miami's Tourism Still On Rise, Service Declines

MIAMI (CBS) ― Vacationers love Miami and its beaches but a new survey may have some for a surprise on the city's service satisfaction.

A new study shows that tourists are overall not so happy on the service they receive.

That's why the Greater Miami Visitors' Bureau is creating a new pitch called "Miami Begins with Me" to convince employees that a first impression and an extra welcoming smile can make a difference.

"Our studies have shown that customer service is o.k. We are not an o.k. destination anymore. We are a world-class community. We are full of four and five star hotels," said William Talbert from Greater Miami Visitors' Bureau.

They are hoping that employees will be more upbeat and provide quality service so that tourists leave happy and return soon.

Some of the employees that have already participated in the program are those of the Victor Hotel in South Beach

"I think with customer service and learning skills its probably no limit," said Chesa Crouch of the Hotel Victor Concierge.

And although the state's tourism numbers are nearly down 2% , Miami is still ranked number two among tourism spots in the nation. However, tourism bosses say that's not enough.

"Tourism is everybody's business. Everybody either works in tourism, has customers who are in tourism, so tourism is everybody's business," said Talbert.

Experts say one in four jobs is tied to tourism as it continues to be the main economic boost for our area.
