Miami Puts Best Foot Forward At Global Pow-Wow
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
There is a global Pow-Wow on Miami Beach this week. The talk is about sun and fun and the hope is that it all adds up to needed economic sizzle. "We expect to get $400 million of future travel business to Miami," Greater Miami Convention & Visitors' Bureau president William Talbert said.
That's the potential windfall for the host city/region, and Greater Miami tourism promoters believe the area is ideally suited to attracting the international crowd at Pow-Wow, billed as the biggest travel event of its kind.
More than 4600 travel bookers are visiting from all points on the compass. There is intense jockeying to sell U.S. destinations to those travel pros. From Alaska to Missouri, and from Texas to Kansas everyone is trying to put their best foot forward in front of the world audience.
Venezuela's Alejandro Alberti is part of that audience. He's looking to book business for people who come to his travel office or visit his website. Alberti figures he will book, "Oh, maybe five million dollars worth" of new tourism business to Miami at this Pow-Wow event.
It all adds up quickly and it needs to. Hotel room rates have dropped sharply in our region this year in a bid to attract visitors with bargain deals. There is no escaping the global economic slowdown, but the Pow-Wow may offer an antidote in the future. That future can't come soon enough for the tourism business that powers our local economy.
