Florida Pilot To Make Historic Flight

MIAMI (CBS) ― A Miami-Dade, Fla. pilot hopes to become the youngest person and first black pilot to fly solo around the world.

Barrington Irving took off from Opa-locka Executive Airport around 10:30 a.m. EDT Friday to complete his 41-day mission. The 23-year-old will fly in a Lancair Columbia 400 single-engine aircraft that he calls "Inspiration."

His U.S. stops include Cleveland, Ohio, and Farmingdale, New York. He expects to cross into Canada on Tuesday, and then travel across the Atlantic, through Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Irving hopes to be back home April 30th, just in time to be recognized at the McDonald's Air and Sea Show in Fort Lauderdale.

His travels will be tracked on the Web site experience-aviation-dot-org.

Irving is the founder and president of Experience Aviation, an organization that encourages minority youths to pursue aviation careers. He's also an aerospace student at Florida Memorial University.
