Considering the dismal state of the world's economy, it's nice just to have a job, but what if you could find the perfect job? An Australian state has launched a global search for candidates for "the best job in the world."
The job pays $105,000 for lazing around a beautiful tropical island for six months. Basically, the "best job in the world" is to become caretaker on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef.
The successful applicant's "key responsibilities" includes exploring the area by taking strolls along the white sandy beaches, soaking up the sun, snorkeling the reef; then report back weekly to a global audience via blogs, photo diaries, video updates and media interviews.
The position, posted by Australia's Tourism Queensland, has garnered worldwide media attention.
The winner, who will stay rent-free in a multi-million dollar three-bedroom beach home complete with plunge pool and golf buggy, must be an excellent communicator and be able to speak and write English.
The winner might also have to "clean the pool" at the beachfront home that comes with the package.
The campaign was part of a drive to protect the state's $18 billion Australian dollar a year tourism industry during the tough economic climate caused by the global financial meltdown.
Tourism officials who launched the campaign say this is a legitimate job which is open to anyone and everyone. On opening day, the website was flooded with about 33 hits per second. All applicants have to do is post a 60-second video explaining why they are the perfect "island caretaker."
Applications are open until February 22. Eleven finalists will be flown to Hamilton Island, Australia in early May for the final selection process and the six month contract will commence on July 1.
